London Skyline Recreated With Fruit and Vegetables

Back in November, Carl Warner (responsible for many of the foodscape photographs you may have come across) was commissioned by the Good Food channel in the UK to make an edible version of the London skyline. Fire & Knives: Stunning Food Writing from the UK

Eatmedaily recently received issue number one of Fire & Knives, a new print quarterly of “new writing about food” out of the UK. In their own words: “We give established writers a place for work that would not be published elsewhere; new writers a place to show themselves and experts in other fields an opportunity to write about our favourite subject.” It’s a rather handsome and inspiring publication, lovingly-designed, all in a format (smaller, thicker stock than your typical magazine) that eschews the glossy.

Edited by food writer, broadcaster, and photographer Tim Hayward — you may know him from his writing for The Guardian — it’s a bold move. Print! No advertising! No content online! Ostensibly subscriptions should cover the entire cost of the operation… the catch is that, for the time being, writers aren’t paid. Which is unfortunate. That said, there’s some of the best writing we’ve come across in a while. Standouts include the unpublished review of a Fanny Cradock book by Elizabeth David, pieces by Oliver Thring, Matthew Fort, Tom Parker Bowles,Tim Hayward himself, and a satirical restaurant review by “The Gastrician.” One year’s subscription is £20.00. Very, very well worth it.

David Letterman Drives the $25,000 Cupcake Car, Attempts to Destroy Christmas Tree

Last night on The Late Show With David Letterman, Letterman got a chance to test-drive a $25,000 four-foot by four-foot chocolate cupcake car. “If you buy it, it comes with a helmet that reads [bleep].” Once he got the hang of it, he went on a destructive rampage, using the cupcake car to repeatedly slam into a Christmas tree.

Coffee Shop Disloyalty Card from Gwilym Davies

Genius idea out of England from Gwilym Davies, the 2009 World Barista Champion: the disloyalty card. In an attempt to promote East London’s emerging coffee shop scene, if you go and “drink coffee at 8 interesting, quality focused cafes,” then Gwilym Davies himself will make you a free cup of coffee.

Burger porn is too easy. Been there, done that. So very 2009. Leave it to Carl’s Jr. to hyper-sexualize… a salad. With the help of Kim Kardashian writhing around, barely clothed, on a bed and, not clothed at all, in a bubble bath, eating various ostensibly healthful ingredients. (Specifically: an apple slice dipped in a raspberry vinaigrette fortified with high fructose corn syrup.) What’s next, a reality star getting dirty with an apple pie? Insert salad-tossing joke here….

Keith Floyd – The Original Food Punk

Keith Floyd, British Chef and TV personality was ‘The Original Food Punk’. He made Gordon Ramsay look like a choirboy. The world will be a much duller place since he died recently, after a hefty fight with cancer. For those of you lucky enough to meet him, or watch one of his 130 shows, you’ll understand why he was such a legend, with his unique and chaotic style of presenting.

He was possibly the first celebrity chef (although he hates the recent phenom of chefs promoting themselves above the food) and it was hard not to love his haphazard style, always with a nice glass of red to hand. And boy did he like his vino!

It must have been a marathon session the night he guaranteed a £36,000 bar bill – which sadly lead to his bankruptcy. He thought more of his friends than his finances that’s for sure. 6 restaurants (5 failed). 4 marriages (4 divorces). He even sold the rights to his name (Floyd’s Restaurant) in the seventies, which meant that his next UK venture had to simply be called ‘Restaurant’. Now that’s a rock ‘n’ roll foodie.

He loved The Stranglers so much that their music was used as the theme tune to most of his shows. The culinary world is certainly a less colourful place without him. He was so unpolitically correct, that there will probably never be another celeb chef like him. “I drink a lot and I smoke a lot, but it’s my life and that’s how I like it”. Search out his shows on YouTube or On Demand TV and soak him up.

Forget cupcake tattoos (No, really, can we please?). Fetishizing dining apparatus, nothing says “I’m uber-serious about what I put in my mouth” more than a cutlery tattoo. While most folks eat with forks, knives, and spoons in their hands, these people eat with them on their hands. If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, nothing says “I’m hungry” like some silverware, right?
